Want to get into a top college? Take these 5 classes.

Not all students aim to apply to highly selective colleges. However, for those who do, our initial
recommendation is to discuss the courses they should take in high school. Having a course selection plan early in their high school career is important, as it gives students time to effectively outline their
academic path.

We believe that course selection in high school plays a key role in showcasing academic rigor and a
student’s readiness for college-level work. Highly selective institutions look for students who challenge

themselves with demanding coursework and demonstrate their ability to excel through both academic
performance and strong work ethic.
So, what courses should students consider taking? Below are the five top classes that can enhance their
college applications.

1. Foreign Language

Many competitive colleges look for students who take a foreign language for all four years. Advanced
courses such as AP Spanish, AP French, or IB Language Studies show linguistic proficiency and
cultural awareness. While four years of a foreign language may not be required by your high school,
don’t skip these classes. We recommend studying one language for four years to achieve proficiency,
rather than attempting two languages without mastering either.

2. Advanced Mathematics

Highly selective colleges expect students to take math courses beyond Algebra II. Advanced coursework
such as AP Calculus AB signal strong analytical and problem-solving skills. If your school offers it, AP
Statistics is another beneficial math course to take. Even if you don’t plan to major in STEM, taking an
advanced math course demonstrates perseverance in a challenging subject.

3. AP US History and Social Sciences

Selective colleges appreciate applicants who demonstrate an understanding of historical and
contemporary issues. Courses like AP U.S. History, AP World History, AP Government, and AP
Macroeconomics not only develop research and analytical skills but also prepare students to engage in
discussions about global and societal issues. If you take one, we recommend AP U.S. History.

4. Physics

Selective colleges prefer students who complete four years of science courses. If you plan to study
engineering or physics, then you should take AP Physics. We recommend all three foundational
sciences—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics—at an advanced level, such as Honors or AP/IB courses. It’s
not required to take a fourth year of science but to stand out, the fourth year of science is a must.

5. Advanced English

Strong writing and critical thinking skills are essential for success in any major. Highly selective colleges
are looking for applicants who took AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature
and Composition. We know our STEM students won’t love reading this, but every college will require an
English or writing class so these classes are important for college preparation.

While these five classes can strengthen your application, the key is to challenge yourself within your
school’s available curriculum. We work with students who attend high schools of various sizes, including
small schools that do not offer all of these advanced courses. Don’t worry if these are not available – just
be sure to take the most rigorous courses available to you to demonstrate your intellectual curiosity and
potential.

The most challenging part? It is crucial to achieve A’s in these courses to be considered for admission to
highly selective colleges and universities.
