The Underestimated PSAT

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, the SAT. The average student and parent we work with views the test as simply a practice test or maybe doesn’t think much of it at all. For some students, we know this can be a costly mistake. The exam holds significant importance, particularly for students aiming to become National Merit Scholars. Not sure if you or your student could be a National Merit Scholar? Well, we don’t know until taking a practice test!

Let’s explore why the PSAT is more than just a practice run and how preparing for it can open
doors to scholarships and academic recognition.

The PSAT: More Than Just a Practice Test
Many students and parents view the PSAT as merely a warm-up for the SAT, but it’s more than that. The PSAT serves as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, a prestigious recognition that can lead to significant financial aid and academic opportunities. High-scoring students can earn National Merit Scholarships, which are highly regarded by colleges and universities.

When Students Take the PSAT
Students typically take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in October of their junior year of high school. Some sophomores also take the PSAT as a practice test to familiarize themselves with the format and content. However, it is the junior year PSAT that is used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Why We Prepare Students for the PSAT
While the PSAT is shorter and slightly less complex than the SAT, it still requires focused preparation. A strong PSAT score can lead to National Merit recognition, and the skills developed while studying for the PSAT are directly transferable to the SAT. By preparing for the PSAT, students not only position themselves for scholarship opportunities but also set the foundation for future success on the SAT.
